Golf vs. Basketball with Wesley Lo

Wesley Lo is a junior at OHS, and is an avid golf and basketball player. We caught up with Wesley to learn more about his pursuits.

Pixel Journal: What are your main sports and how much time do you spend on them weekly?

Wesley: I play golf and basketball mainly. I started playing golf when I was 5, and I started basketball close to 3 years ago. I spend around 7-8 hours a week on golf. Each time I go to the course, I am there for about 3-4 hours. For basketball, I spend around 15 hours per week either playing or doing other training.

PJ: What level do you do these sports at?

W: For basketball, I play at a high-school varsity level. For golf, I’ve sort of toned down a bit because last year I took a gap year and during the first half of the year, I tried out professional golf. I quickly found out that the lifestyle that came with that didn’t really suit me. Golf and basketball are very different because with golf you’re playing completely for yourself. You enter tournaments, and if you win you make money, but if you lose you get nothing. With basketball, it’s salary-based, and even if you don’t play due to injury or something similar, you’re still making the money as guaranteed on your contract.

PJ: What is your lifestyle due to the sports you play?

W: I travel a lot so I make sure to build everything around that. The first year that I was in OHS, I travelled around the world and stayed in places such as Spain, Japan, Greece, and India for 2 weeks each. During that time, I cut my time into thirds; I’d spend 8 hour sleeping, 8 hours on my schoolwork, and 8 hours on my sports. It became especially hard when I was in London, due to the fact that my classes started around midnight. The constant travelling and different time zones meant that I didn’t really have time to actually play professionally back then, as the free time I had would go into practicing for the sport and also experiencing new cultures.
