Unveiling the Storybook: An Update on the SOHS Yearbook

There is no doubt OHS has engaged and passionate  students and instructors, informative events, and a multitude of clubs and classes. Throughout the school year, students share exciting moments and achievements with their peers, hear about them in the Pixel Weekly, and occasionally on the Pronto bulletin. As unique and unusual of a school as Stanford Online High School is,the tradition of creating and owning a yearbook is not lost. Despite being located in towns, counties, states, countries, and even continents around the world, the OHS yearbook Club comes together every year to encapsulate the OHS Spirit in a physical manifestation of the events of the year.

How are these yearbooks created? Who coordinates and designs the book? What goes into this yearbook? How can you be a part of it? Where can you order one? What will it look like?

If you are one of the many people asking yourself these questions you’re in the right place! Arielle Clyne (‘25) interviewed two of the three yearbook editors for the yearbook club to find out more.

First, we will hear from Lexi MacRury (‘24). She is a full-time student and fully dedicated to creating the yearbook as Editor-in-Chief. Lexi has been involved with the yearbook for three years: a staff member her sophomore year, copy editor her junior year, and finally Editor-in-Chief this year! As Editor-in-Chief, Lexi oversees the  staff, works on the senior spread, and supervises all deadlines to ensure that everyone has the tools and resources needed to maximize creativity.

So how has the yearbook been coming along?  According to Lexi, the yearbook is going “great! By the second week of February, we should be nearly done. There are only a couple of deadlines left with parent ads due February 9th and student headshots due February 28th. After this, all that will be left would be the finishing touches and submitting it to print” Lexi ardently shares. We should expect to see “lots of new things! We have new designs and colors, separated 7th and 8th grade sections, a fantastic cover, and more exciting items I can’t wait for everyone to see.” You heard it here first Pixels. There is a lot to look forward to in the 2023-2024 yearbook!

Next, we have Alexa Pacholyk (‘26), a full-time OHS student and copy editor. Her responsibilities include overseeing page editing after spreads are completed before sending the yearbook to the printer and working with a team of students who thoroughly review the pages. She has been a part of the SOHS yearbook for 2 years now.

She shares that “the yearbook is coming along well! We recently had our first deadline for pages and it’s very exciting.” Expect exciting content from school events and a great-looking yearbook.

So how do you get the chance to be in this spectacular yearbook? OHSers can submit photos, quotes, and recommendations wherever a form comes out! Every student, teacher, and parent helps build and create the yearbook. Submitting anything you may have, especially a headshot and quotes regarding events, brings the yearbook together and keeps everyone involved. If you want to be in it, submit your yearbook photo by February 28, 2024.

Now that we know who is behind designing and organizing the yearbook, let’s find out where this magnificent chronicle is created: the yearbook team uses Jostens yearbook Avenue to create and edit pages. However, the components of the creation come from the editing skills and personal platforms used and uploaded by the talented staff.

So how do you get your hands on yearbooks? Well, they are currently available for purchase! You can find the link to buy them on the Gateway. Buyers should expect to receive their yearbook in late April to early May. Yearbooks will also be available for sale at Pixel Gathering and graduation this coming June! They will be sent directly to the address students request when their families purchase their yearbooks. Make sure you buy one soon because the deadline to purchase is coming up soon!

At OHS we are so lucky to have such dedicated and talented staff to create these yearbooks every year. If you are interested in contributing to the design and being a part of the yearbook team be sure to join at the beginning of the next school year. Additional details will be published in the Pixel Weekly and TGIF during that time.

Creating a yearbook is no simple task. One might even say they have the challenge of having to top the phenomenal books of previous years. Yet, this team always manages to follow through. Don’t miss out on the 2023-2024 yearbook, it is sure to be stupendous.
