Club Spotlight: Pixel Chefs
Pixel Chefs is the place to go for anyone interested in anything to do with cooking, baking, or food at all. It is run by Dashmi (’24). Check out Clubs Editor Fevroniya’s (’24) interview with Dashmi!
Pixel Journal: Tell us a little bit about Pixel Chefs.
Dashmi: Pixel Chefs is probably the largest club community at OHS, with almost 160 members! But no matter how large we are, the chat remains active with shared food pictures, recipes, and deep-dive conversations into specific dishes! We keep Pixel Chefs asynchronous so most interactions occur in chat or at any food-related events. This is my second year running the circle, and I have so many ideas for the coming year!
PJ: What inspired you to start Pixel Chefs?
D: I actually did not start Pixel Chefs! Umar, a 2021 OHS alum, started it. I actually became leader by accident, when he put my information as club leader for the next year while I was still a freshman! Even though I got the role in a funny way, I have loved leading the circle and hope to do it for the next two years!
PJ: What are some of your plans for this upcoming year?
D: One project we started when the year kicked off is the Pixel Chefs Skill Workshops! Students who want to learn or brush up on a fundamental kitchen skill can attend workshops throughout the semester that are taught by fellow peers who are willing to share their tips and tricks on the skill!
We will also do action challenges this semester, where we have to create any dish with a pre-specified ingredient in under a week. For times like Thanksgiving, we might make the specified theme a pie, for which students have a week to make a pie and share pictures in chat or on social media.
PJ: What is your favorite thing about running the club?
D: The chat is always active! Whether it be a new recipe someone has tried out, or a technique that a student has mastered that other chefs want to learn, or a 99+ conversation on a cultural dish, I can always count on the circle for making the chat a lively and welcoming place.
