Trick or Treat for UNICEF Event

Pixel Journal: What is Trick or Treat for UNICEF?

Alexandria Thomas: Trick-or-treat for UNICEF is really a great way to get involved in UNICEF’s goal to help children all over the world with their basic needs like food, water, shelter, education, and more. This event is structured to make it easy for you to raise money through trick or treating with your friends and around your community. Going out and participating will not only raise money for the cause but also bring awareness to your community!

PJ: How and why should one get involved in this event?

AT: To get involved, first order your own Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF box for free on UNICEF’s website or print out the box and make it yourself! On Halloween night, you can go around your community and ask for donations to UNICEF instead of candy. Pennies, dimes, quarters, dollar bills, any amount people are willing to give counts!

Getting involved is important because even if you only raise one dollar, that one dollar and will give a child fresh water for two months. By participating, you are taking the initiative to bring awareness to your community and help children around the world.

PJ: How can one participate in this event if they don’t celebrate Halloween?

AT: There are a lot of ways you can still contribute if you don't celebrate Halloween! Some ideas include holding a bake sale, raising money by asking for donations in your community, hosting a pumpkin carving contest in your neighborhood and charging a small entrance fee, the possibilities are open-ended!

PJ: What are the Dos and Don’ts?

AT: Make sure to have your UNICEF box when you go trick-or-treating. This signals to people that you're not just trying to go around getting money, but that you are fundraising for UNICEF! In addition, there will be a form for OHS students who participated to submit their results. Make sure to submit the form by 6 AM on November 1st so that the results can be announced at the OHS Halloween assembly! The form is here. Lastly, remember to go ahead and send the actual money directly to UNICEF through their form on their website (there is no deadline for that).

Some things that you should keep in mind while participating is that some people might not want to donate and that is okay! They might also be surprised that you are asking for donations instead of candy, so just remember to be respectful! Also, do not ask for both candy and money!

PJ: Are there prizes?

AT: There will be two winners, one for the highest amount of money raised and another for the highest number of friends that you got involved (these friends can be OHS students who live close to you or friends outside of the OHS). The two winners will get pixel plushies as prizes!

If you are interested, you can find more information on the UNICEF website (instructions will also be sent to you after ordering your box). Remember to submit your results to the form by 6 AM PST on November 1st if you choose to participate!
