Letter from the Editor

Dear Reader,

As we finish our first full month of school, I hope that everyone is well into the swing of our new schedule, classes, and assignments. As I’m personally adjusting to senior year, I want to assure you that the feelings of both stress and excitement during this time period still remain unchanged from what I remember of my first few years at OHS compared to going into my fifth.

However, I have learned a few tips: organize some form of a to-do list or planner arrangement (saves you a ton of worry, trust me), try your best to stay involved in clubs and the community, and remember to take it easy. This first month back to school period is as much of a period of adjustment as it is a period of essay writing and WileyPlus sets. Thus, remember to take your time and prioritize your mental health while finding your footing.

It is also helpful to reflect on September as Suicide Prevention Month. The 2019 Youth Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System show that, in 2020, 18.8% of high school students seriously considered attempting suicide and 8.9% attempted suicide. However, it is important to stress that suicide is preventable. There are a variety of support services and counseling members here at OHS in addition to mental health support groups, online community resources, hotlines, and other mental health professionals that can help those who are struggling with unhealthy thoughts and emotions.

Although the due dates for our first papers are nearing and our calendars are filling up, ensure that you set aside time to focus on your mind and activities that you enjoy, check in on yourself and friends, and work on your own definition of what wellness means to you.

In this issue, we feature a diverse range of perspectives! We cover student and teacher opinions within the heavy debate of whether cameras should be required during class as well as introduce the newly elected student government members, each discussing their vision for the new school year. In addition, we are spotlighting OHS’ newest club, the Asian and Pacific American Student Union, as well as discussing the significance of Hispanic Latinx Heritage Month. Enjoy listening to our September playlist and reading the new issue!

Yours,

Rachel
