Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at OHS

From September 15th to October 15th, Americans recognize National Hispanic Heritage Month. This isn’t exactly a time to party, but a month for Americans to learn about and highlight the efforts and cultures of American citizens with ancestors from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, or South America. The ways that people make the most of Hispanic Heritage Month include researching about the impact and history of Hispanic culture, icons, businesses, and traditions. The students and faculty of Stanford OHS are among the many people who are celebrating Hispanic heritage this month.

AAPI Heritage Month: Celebrating Asian Identities

In the United States, May is officially known as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. During this month, we remember and celebrate all the contributions, hard work, and the importance of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans all around the world. For this year’s AAPI month, the Asian/Pacific American Student Union (otherwise known as APASU and co-led by seniors Ilana Nguyen and Maddy Manning-Bi) asked OHS students and APASU’s club sponsor (Mr. Satanapong) to write about how they connect with and identify as members of the AAPI community and how they celebrate their heritage.

Grading at OHS: Too Harsh or Just Right?

Grades are a method of quantifying student success and achievements. Many students view grading as a burden and, at times, a reflection of how badly they have failed. However, many teachers often disagree, saying that grading provides students with a reflection of what needs to be improved. Furthermore, while grading for some courses like math are objective, grading for other courses like English may be subjective to the teacher’s specific wants. As a result of these differing viewpoints, student opinions on grading at OHS vary quite a lot. Some students agree that the grading is too harsh while others say that it is acceptable given the rigor of the classes. In this article, we’ll look at some student opinions on the grading at OHS.

Celebrating Black History Month at OHS

Black History Month has been celebrated officially every year since 1976 during the month of February and is a time dedicated to celebrating the achievements and sacrifices of African Americans. According to the founder of OHS’s Black Student Union, Kelsey Barnes, Black History Month, in addition to being a time for Black people to feel appreciated, is “a time to reflect on the trials and tribulations that the Black community faces, while also recognizing how the Black community…made something beautiful [from them].”

Hispanic Latinx Heritage Month

Hispanic Latinx Heritage month, ranging from September 15th to October 15th, is a national celebration of the culture, history, and contributions of Latin American and Hispanic people in the United States. The month ranges from mid-September to mid-October because it marks the anniversary of independence for countries like Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and Chile from Spain. We also celebrate Hispanic Latinx Heritage month at SOHS! Spanish instructor Professor Valdano has created presentations for homerooms for this month, and many events have been taking place, such as the Documentary Underwater Dreams Viewing!
